Oxford Brookes

Last week I gave a lecture to 2nd year marketing undergraduates at Oxford Brookes University. I was invited to act as a guest speaker by Sally Harridge-March one of the senior lecturers in the marketing department and I have to say whilst I was happy to say yes as the day approached I started to get nervous, it was not just the though of standing in front of a lot of students but also the fact that the lecturers in marketing would be in attendance as well.

The thought of an F- would just not go away.

As it happened the 2 hours I was there went really quickly and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The talk was on Creativity in Digital, Direct and Database marketing and as the students were going to have to sit an exam on how this related to a local charity I included the work we are doing with St. Joseph’s hospice in Hackney as a case study. This enabled me to demonstrate how brand development can help sustain and underpin the perception changes the client needed to make to increase awareness and as a result funds raised as well as how creativity is not just about images and design but the overall thought process that is involved in delivering a sustainable long term solution.

I believe the talk went well as there were questions afterwards, and a copies of my presentation were requested and hopefully my input will have helped increase the awareness the students have of this sector and also how to use creative thought not only in imagery but in arriving at and delivering a complete solution.

I have to admit I am quite looking forward to the next invite.
